The action is a true magnum Mauser (9.25-inches long) with single square bridge, integral bases (accept Talley rings) with sighting notch (to clear open sights), sculpted drop box bottom metal (four plus one capacity) with inside-the-bow release button, two-position knurled wing safety, jeweled bolt body and follower, checkered (two panels) bolt knob and a finely-checkered trigger shoe. Based on a single square bridge magnum Mauser action with drop box, it wears a tapering 24-inch barrel (.725-inch muzzle diameter, stippled ramp front sight with folding hood, three interchangeable brass-beaded blades of differing heights marked .270/.300/.330-inches, integral sling swivel stud, second recoil lug, island rear sight assembly with one fixed and four folding leafs engraved 100/200/300/400/500 – each with a silver sighting line). The action retains its original serial number (55248 appears at the lug and on extractor, bolt handle, bolt release, floor plate and trigger) and is highly refined with flawless internal polishing, refitting and tuning. The trigger face is wonderfully serrated. TOM SIATOS (1923-2008) spent the majority of his life in close association with firearms and hunting. His professional contributions, tremendous category knowledge, bottomless enthusiasm and bold personality influenced the firearms industry and outdoor media to such a degree that it remains a viable force today. Tom was the second editor of Guns & Ammo Magazine. As such, he was responsible for the general tone of the iconic publication. A consummate hunter, spectacular all-around shot and true connoisseur of fine firearms, his interests spanned the full spectrum of the shooting sports. In 1942, Tom enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served in units that scouted and destroyed isolated enemy communication sites on a number of Pacific islands, eventually receiving a battlefield commission. Barrel features include a banded front sight assembly with brass-beaded blade, banded color case sling swivel stud and an island rear sight base with express blades (one fixed and two folders, each with sighting lines). The action has been carefully polished and modified to a single square bridge configuration, tapped, and now incorporates a custom bolt shroud with a two-position side safety, Leonard Brownell sweeping bolt handle with hollow knob and custom color case drop box bottom metal with an inside-the-bow release button. The rib is topped with a beaded blade front sight and a dovetailed rear sight with two hand-matted leafs (one fixed and one folder), each dressed with a gold sighting line. The action, bottom metal, grip cap and screws are appointed with light bordering and scroll engraving. Stock accents include a Schnabel forearm, checkered grip with partial Mullered border, scalloped pancake cheek rest with shadow line, checkered horn butt plate and a grip cap with raised initial plate (blank). Custom Winchester pre-64 Model 70 .257 Roberts. Logically attributed to Ike Ellis but unsigned, serial 108459 is based on a Model 70 action made in 1949 which appears to have originally been a .220 Swift (has Swift extractor ring, magazine box and a short follower). That said, the barrel stamp (underside at the lug) is “257 R 49”. The barrel has been reduced to 22 inches and recontoured so no evidence of drilling/tapping remains. Features include a rust blue finish, three-position safety, checkered bolt knob (two panels) and a reprofiled/ checkered bolt release button. Talley mounts (1-inch medium rings) are attached. Trigger pull is crisp. STOCK: Drawn from a heavily-figured AAA-grade English blank, formalities include an ebony forend tip, 24 lines-per-inch borderless wrap checkering highlighted by intricate fleurs, scalloped cheek rest with shadow line, steel grip cap, sling swivel studs and a Pachmayr recoil pad. Features include a blued receiver, tang aperture sight and color case lever. STOCK: The “Fancy” walnut has strong figure, pistol grip with cap and a crescent butt plate. STOCK: The McMillan synthetic stock has positive textured gripping surfaces, a soft Monte Carlo comb, Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad and sling swivel studs. The action beds on aluminum pillars and is glassed at the recoil lug. Short Action Customs fluted the bolt body and added the large bolt knob. Metal finish is Cerakote. No box, papers or build sheet.
