Made in 1884 and supported by the included factory letter (1963, Winchester Gun Museum), serial 42597 has a 28-inch round barrel (.80-inch muzzle diameter, blade front sight, elevator rear sight marked “1876”, full-length magazine tube). Features include a color case hammer/lever/trigger and a crescent butt with sliding trap (housing a vintage unbranded five-section cleaning rod). DIMENSIONS: Weight is 10.6 pounds and the length-of-pull is 13.0 inches. CONDITION: The bore is bright with sharp rifling, some light browning and spots of minor roughness. The dust cover is rock-solid on its track. All markings are sharp. Barrel bluing is at least 70 percent with ghosted thinning and trace browning. Receiver finish crowds 80 percent. Colors are strong, at least 60 percent, and the loading gate finish is vivid. All aspects of mechanical operation are positive and absent indications of wear. Wood is well-figured, solid and shows at approximately 70 percent with a scattering of chips, rubs and impressions. The price is firm and layaway is available. $10,000 plus shipping.
