Custom Ruger Number 1 7x57mm Mauser. Based on a rust blued barreled action (serial 130-42762 made in 1977), features of this elegant rifle include a banded front sight topped by a brass-beaded blade, banded sling swivel stud, integral rib with folding rear sight and ring mounts (1-inch, high), mechanical safety and a well-tuned trigger. Stocked in a superb blank of AAA-grade English walnut with rich, swirling grain, the sleek forend is dressed with full wrap-around 26 lines-per-inch checkering which in turn is accented by a mullered border. The action is bookended by sweeping scallops with shadow lines of near perfect execution. The slightly open pistol grip wears a continuance of the checkering pattern that brilliantly surrounds the upper tang and the butt has shadowed cheekpiece of similar execution. The stock is further highlighted by metal appointments that include an oval forend shield, steel grip cap, pedestaled sling swivel stud and a metal butt plate with widow’s peak. Both wood and metal are unsigned. ENGRAVING: Signed only as “PR”, the intricate scroll pattern graces the action, barrel shank, front sight, forward swivel stud, forend shield, lever, grip cap and butt plate, then transitions into scroll and vines on the bottom of action and along the tangs. Gold wire accents appear on the front sight, forend shield, barrel shank, action, grip cap and butt plate. Screws are perfectly timed. DIMENSIONS: Weight is 7.3 pounds sans rings. Length-of-pull is 13.6 inches and the barrel length is 22 inches. CONDITION: The bore is pristine. Metal finish is approximately 99 percent, with only slight handling wear and two small scratches on the right side of the barrel just below the detent for the rear ring mount. Wood is 98 percent, with a small field of tiny impressions along the point of the forend, scattered handling marks and one impression on the left side of the grip that somewhat disappears into the point of the central checkering diamond. CASE: A canvas and leather case with key locks is included, its condition reflecting that of the rifle. The price is firm and layaway is available. $7,500 plus shipping.
