W. J. Jeffery .450 No. 2 Nitro Express (3.5 inch) double rifle. Serial 16181 sports 24-inch barrels with a ramp front sight, sling eye, quarter rib with one fixed (marked 100) and four folding express sighting leafs (optimistically marked 200/300/400/500) and a scalloped boxlock action with ejectors, bushed strikers and a mechanical safety. Both the splinter forend and butt wear wrap-around bordered checkering, and the butt a capped grip, sling eye, unmarked oval on the toe line and a pad. CONDITION: Bores are bright, with only a suggestion of roughness. Barrels are on face. Ejectors, triggers and safety operate with authority. As refurbished, barrels have softened markings and a scattering of tiny pits that survived polishing. Blue stands at about 85 percent. The action has fully silvered and shows some polishing marks, a few small pits and dings. Forend furniture, top lever, guard, tang and grip cap exhibit the same. The splinter appears to be original and has a number of impressions. Checkering has been refreshed. The butt is similar to the forend and clearly refinished, with a hairline at the upper point of the left scallop. ENGRAVING: Barrel marked “W.J. Jeffery & Co. Makers” and “13 King Street St James St London”. “SAFE” is marked in refreshed gold. “W.J. Jeffery & Co” rides a ribbon on either side of the action. A modest outline follows along most of the metal surfaces as well. DIMENSONS: Weight is 12.0 pounds. Length of pull is 14.75 inches, drops are 1.5 and 2.1 inches with the stock absent cast. The price is firm and layaway is available. $16,000 plus shipping.
